Weezer - “Across the Sea”
My husker bu is across the sea right now, so this song is rather appropriate, even though she’s not an 18-year old girl who live in small city of Japan and she didn’t hear me on the radio about one year ago (although she did want to know all about me, my hobbies, my favorite food, and my birthday).
Braid - “Niagra”
“let me be your float device
let me do your swear work
cause kisses aren’t
contracts baby and
these days neither are
words”
I always thought the lyrics were “let me by your float device/ let me be your swear word/ ‘cause kisses are contracts, baby/ and these days you’re all words”
Fugazi - “Styrofoam”
Repeater is such an awesome album. This song has been my alarm clock for the last week and it gets me so pumped in the morning. I was also on quite the Fugazi kick last night, listening to End Hits and In on the Kill Taker.
Joan of Arc - “Life Sentence/Twisted Ladder”
My favorite song of the intentionally varied new Joan of Arc album, Flowers. In a recent interview, Tim Kinsella said:
There was a lot more rearranging of things this time, and also this time we were more aware of the music as a collection of songs [than only as an album]. You know, because records are such an antiquated form now. People just listen to iTunes on shuffles, so we wanted to sort of respond to that.”
This song is driving and poppy and the guitar work is a lil’ more reminiscent of Ghosts and Vodka than Joan of Arc. My other favorite songs on the album are “Delicious Herbal Laxative” and “Fogbow”.
Jeremy Enigk - “Restart”
Off of Jeremy Enigk’s new album OK Bear. This album is surprisingly upbeat and very straightforward. It’s nice to hear Enigk’s take on guitar pop. This song almost reminds me of something Ryan Adams would write. I guess he’s saving the more epic songs for the rumored Sunny Day Real Estate reunion. The production on this album is less… epic than any of Enigk’s previous efforts too. No organ overtures found here.
The New Pornographers - “Sing Me Spanish Techno”
For some reason, I just wasn’t able to get into this band before. I really have no idea why. Same thing with the Wrens. But all of a sudden, the Wrens finally hit me about two months ago (before that I’d only listen to “Happy”) and the New Pornographers finally started jiving about a week ago. They sure do craft a damn good pop song, don’t they?
Thorns of Life - “Available for Revenge”
Live from 924 Gilman’s soundboard. Can’t wait for the full length to come out.
Q and Not U - “So Many Animal Calls”
Definitely not my favorite Q and Not U song or record, but a great one nonetheless. This is currently my alarm clock song.
Bonnie “Prince” Billy - “At the Break of Day”
I woke up at 6:30 am with the sun beaming into my room. Love it. However, this marks the official beginning of my allergy season…
